Berlin Experiences app — privacy policy

This policy covers the Berlin Experiences app for Android and iOS. The website is covered separately by our website privacy policy.

Last updated: 21 July 2026

The short version

The Berlin Experiences app collects no personal data. There is no account, no sign-in and no registration. There are no adverts, no analytics and no tracking of any kind. Nothing you do in the app is tied to you as an individual, because the app never learns who you are.

What the app is

The app is a companion to berlinexperiences.com. It lets you browse our catalogue of private guided tours, read about them, play our history quizzes, compare historical photographs of Berlin with the view in front of you, and see which of the sites we visit are nearby. Everything transactional — enquiries, availability, accounts, bookings and payment — happens on our website, in your own browser, and is governed by our website privacy policy and terms and conditions.

What we collect

Nothing. The app has no sign-up form, no login, no contact form and no profile. We do not collect your name, your email address, your phone number, your location, your photographs, your device identifiers, your advertising ID, or any record of your activity in the app. We do not create a profile of you, and we have no way to identify you from your use of the app.

Location

If you allow it, the app reads your device’s location so it can show how far you are from a tour site or from the spot where a historical photograph was taken. That calculation happens entirely on your own device. Your coordinates are never transmitted to us or to anyone else, and are never stored. You can refuse the permission, or withdraw it later in your device settings; the app carries on working, simply without distances.

Camera

The Then & Now screen uses your camera as a live viewfinder, so you can line a historical photograph up against the present-day view. Nothing is photographed, recorded, saved or uploaded. The app has no ability to store an image from your camera, and requests no access to your photo library.

Where the app’s content comes from

Tour descriptions, quizzes, historical photographs and the daily “On this day” entries are downloaded from our own server as ordinary, public, read-only content over an encrypted HTTPS connection. These requests carry no account, no identifier and no personal data. Like any web server, ours records standard technical request logs, which are retained briefly for security and diagnostics and are not used to identify or profile app users.

Links out of the app

Some parts of the app open a web page in your browser — a tour page on berlinexperiences.com, our tour notes on marginalia.guide, a review page on Tripadvisor, or an email to us. Once you leave the app, the privacy policy of that site or service applies.

Children

The app is intended for adults. It is not directed at children, and since it collects no data, it collects no data from children.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct, export and erase the personal data an organisation holds about you. Because the app collects no personal data, there is nothing held about you from your use of it, and so nothing to access, correct, export or delete. If you have booked a tour with us through our website, the data we hold from that booking — and how to have it deleted — is covered by our website privacy policy. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority; ours is the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.

Changes to this policy

If a future version of the app changes what it collects, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the date at the top will change.
